In line with SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, the ASIST La Paz Campus conducted an extension activity on December 3, 2023 in Barangay Poblacion, Lagayan, Abra, titled "Fostering Good Governance: Strengthening the Barangay Through Policy and Ordinance Formulation." This collaborative effort involved the Gender and Development Office, Political Science Instructors, and Social Sciences Instructors from Lagangilang and Bangued Campuses.

The event started with a warm welcome from the Punong Barangay, Edgar Layao, who expressed gratitude for choosing their barangay. He emphasized the potential impact of improving governance to address local needs and development.

La Paz Campus Administrator, Engr. Guillermo Labios, assured participants of the partnership's significance, highlighting the university's duty to contribute to community upliftment.

Political Science Head, Asst. Prof. Ciela Marie Pacopia, outlined the workshop's rationale. The Political Science officers provided an intermission number, adding a touch of cultural appreciation.

Mr. Arlon Ralph Campos started off the substantive discussions by going into detail about the history and notable aspects of Barangay. Jhenver Viste subsequently examined the Roles and Authority of Barangay Authorities.

In the afternoon session, Social Science Professor Leandro Alejandre shared insights on Basic Skills in the Conduct of Meetings: Parliamentary Procedure, drawing from his experiences as a former barangay official.

Professor of Social Science, Jude Mark Tejero, gave a closing lecture to the attendees, outlining the process for creating barangay ordinances and policies and stressing the importance of using these instruments to promote community development.

Awards of gratitude were given to the Punong Barangay, the Resource Speakers, and the participants as the activity came to a close. In her closing remarks, Dr. Mary Joan T. Guzman, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, acknowledged the group's unity of purpose in promoting community development and local governance.
