In a significant step towards enhancing academic collaboration, the Abra State Institute of Science and Technology (ASIST) participated in a comprehensive historical research training program hosted by the University of the Philippines Baguio. Mr. William Jared Real represented ASIST at this three-day intensive workshop, which took place from August 5-7, 2024.

This participation aligns with the recently established partnership between ASIST and UP Baguio, formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on May 25, 2023. The collaboration aims to strengthen both institutions' core mandates in instruction, research, extension, and resource generation through various initiatives including co-teaching, joint research projects, training programs, and expertise-sharing.

The training program, chaired by Renz L. Lamayo of the SSREI, offered a deep dive into the world of historical research. Day one focused on foundational aspects, introducing participants to research methodologies, the importance of evidence, and hands-on document analysis. The second day explored various research avenues, including archival research, oral history, and digital resources. The final day honed in on essential skills such as writing techniques, proper citation, and ethical considerations in historical research.

Notable sessions included "Historical Source Analysis" by Charita A. Delos Reyes, "Archival Research" by Luis Zuriel P. Domingo, and "Oral History" co-presented by Analyn B. Munoz and Joao Paulo D. Reginaldo. The workshop culminated in a practical exercise where participants drafted capsule proposals for historical research projects, followed by presentations and peer feedback.

This training not only equipped participants with crucial skills in historical research but also fostered inter-institutional collaboration. As ASIST and UP Baguio continue to strengthen their partnership, such initiatives promise to elevate the quality of academic research and instruction in the region. Source: Patrick A.
