As part of the nationwide celebration of the 124th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary with a theme “Transforming Public Service in the next decade: Honing Agile and Future-Ready Service Heroes," the Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST) organized a tree planting activity at Sitio Mapaloong, Barangay Laang, Lagangilang, Abra on September 2, 2024. This initiative resonated with the theme of environmental sustainability, placing a special focus on bamboo planting to contribute to ecological conservation efforts and reinforce the values of public service.
The bamboo planting initiative aimed to support a broader goal of environmental preservation by combating climate change, preventing soil erosion, and promoting sustainable land use practices. The initiative entrusted each participant from ASIST with the responsibility of planting a single bamboo seedling, fostering a deep sense of responsibility and community engagement in environmental stewardship.
The event commenced with a ceremonial flag ritual in front of the Administration Building, followed by a brief message from school administrators outlining the month’s activities. ASIST President, Dr. Gregorio T. Turqueza Jr., emphasized the significance of bamboo from both ecological and economic perspectives. Renowned for its rapid growth and carbon absorption capabilities, bamboo was selected for its numerous environmental benefits, including its crucial role in preventing soil degradation and mitigating flooding in rural areas. Additionally, the president, Dr. Turqueza Jr., spearheaded the Bamboo Project: Bamboo Industry Development for Environment Conservation and Countryside Post-COVID Economic Boom in Abra.
Despite the weather conditions, the activity proceeded with an assembly at the designated site in Mapaloong. Faculty members and staff from ASIST gathered early in the morning, armed with bamboo seedlings and planting tools, united by a shared commitment to safeguarding the environment. With enthusiasm, the participants moved to their designated areas and meticulously planted their bamboo seedlings, making sure to secure each plant firmly in the soil. They were reminded of the importance of nurturing their plants in the coming months, underscoring a collective commitment to environmental care. The camaraderie and teamwork among participants were palpable, as they collaborated to make the activity both productive and meaningful.
The bamboo planting activity is anticipated to yield long-term benefits in the area. Bamboos not only provide significant environmental advantages but also offer economic potential as a sustainable resource for local communities. This initiative marks the beginning of a series of planned environmental programs by ASIST, which aims to expand efforts in reforestation, environmental protection, and community participation.
The bamboo planting event, held in celebration of the 124th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary, was a resounding success. It not only contributed to the ecological preservation of the area but also instilled a profound sense of environmental responsibility among participants. The institution has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to both environmental stewardship and the core values of public service, paving the way for future sustainable initiatives.
