The 57th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was celebrated in September 2024 with a month-long series of events that culminated in the ASEAN Fusion 2024, organized by the International Affairs and Linkages Office (IALO) of Ifugao State University (IFSU). The celebration was not only a milestone in ASEAN’s long-standing cooperation but also an opportunity to highlight the importance of cross-cultural communication and regional unity. The ASEAN Fusion 2024 forum, held on September 5, was an academic gathering aimed at fostering connections among ASEAN youth while showcasing the rich cultural diversity within the region.
The theme of this year’s celebration, “Connected and Resilient Community,” encapsulated the goal of strengthening regional cooperation through mutual respect for cultural differences. The forum featured Mr. Romulo A. Bagacina Jr., a Special Science Teacher and Information and Planning Officer at the Philippine Science High School-Ilocos Region Campus. Mr. Bagacina discussed the importance of cross-cultural communication, particularly during regional crises. He emphasized that effective communication could ensure that disaster management efforts were culturally sensitive and well-coordinated, leading to better recovery outcomes. His message was clear: when diverse cultures work together, they become more resilient and capable of overcoming challenges.
As part of the ASEAN Fusion 2024 celebrations, several competitions were held to encourage active youth participation from higher education institutions (HEIs) across the ASEAN region. These competitions included categories such as Essay Writing, Cultural Dance (Recorded), and Digital Poster. The goal was to highlight the role of the youth in shaping the future of ASEAN through creative expression, intellectual engagement, and cultural representation.
The ASIST team emerged as the Champion in the Cultural Dance (Recorded) competition, showcasing their talent and passion for preserving and promoting their cultural heritage. The Cultural Dance team, composed of Marshall Barney, Avril Jamelagne Barreras, Irish Bilgera, James Earl Boajon, Joshua Bringas, John Cris Espinas, Zeny Lagen, Kristine Charlotte Legaspi, and Bea Angelica Padagas, won, demonstrating their talent and cultural pride. They were coached by Ms. Lei Xandra Balmaceda.
This achievement not only celebrated the creativity and artistic flair of ASIST students but also underscored the power of cultural performances in uniting communities and fostering mutual understanding.
Additionally, ASIST earned the 2nd Runner-Up position in the Essay Writing competition, further solidifying its place as an academic leader in the region. In Essay Writing, Kryshan Charisma T. Astudillo earned Second Place, showcasing her writing prowess and deep understanding of ASEAN’s future. She was mentored by Ms. Ginnie Montero.
These accomplishments are a testament to ASIST’s commitment to excellence in both cultural expression and academic pursuits. By participating in ASEAN Fusion 2024, ASIST students not only represented their institution but also played an active role in the broader vision of a united and resilient ASEAN community. The recognition of ASIST’s achievements is a source of pride for the university and serves as a reminder of the potential of youth to drive change and make meaningful contributions to regional development.
