BAGUIO CITY – The Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST) achieved a momentous stride on October 14, 2025, during its 179th Regular Board of Trustees (BOT) Meeting at the Le Monet Hotel. The meeting, the last to be presided by the esteemed Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner Marita R. Canapi, resulted in the unanimous approval of key resolutions that will pave the way toward full university status of the ASIST and its commitment to the CHED ACHIEVE framework.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing the status of conversion to university compliance of the ASIST, where it was noted that only a few remaining requirements need to be addressed before achieving the coveted university title. The approved agenda items directly support this goal, reinforcing the institution's commitment to academic excellence and effective and efficient Management.
The Board's decisions focused on ensuring sustained growth and quality. Financial plans for the free higher education program were approved, securing resources to keep education accessible for students. This vital action supports UN SDG 4: Quality Education.

The leadership of the university was bolstered through the approval of new designations for academic and administrative officials, including Deans for the newly created colleges, a necessary step in the university compliance process. Coupled with the approval of appointments and promotions for senior faculty and staff, this strengthens the expertise and governance of the institution, supporting UN SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
ASIST solidified its role as a driver of regional development by sanctioning the creation of new Research and Extension Centers. This initiative will foster creative, relevant and innovative research programs and facilitate high-impact and transformative extension and outreach programs, ensuring the expertise of ASIST directly benefits communities and addresses pressing needs like food security and sustainable practices, aligning with UN SDG 2: Zero Hunger and UN SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
The Board also confirmed the continuation of the school's existing income-generating projects and approved funding that will benefit many student scholars. These measures reflect a dedication to improved revenue generation and resource management, directly tackling UN SDG 1: No Poverty and UN SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
The approved agenda strongly emphasized the expansion of ASIST's influence. The Board authorized the university's leadership to enter into several agreements aimed at enhancing community services and safety on campus, demonstrating ASIST's role as a responsible community partner in line with UN SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
Crucially, the comprehensive long-term development blueprint of the ASIT was approved with finality, providing a clear roadmap for sustainable growth over the next decade. Furthermore, the President, Dr. Gregorio T. Turqueza Jr., was granted authority to sign three new international partnership agreements with institutions in Asia. These strategic links will create avenues for global academic exchange and talent circulation, significantly expanding ASIST's external linkages and partnerships and reinforcing UN SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
